Engelbrecht expected to play for Germany at world juniors
Posted By BY JIM WALLACE STANDARD STAFF The Niagara IceDogs shored up their goaltending situation Thursday afternoon in the Canadian Hockey League import draft. With the 43rd pick overall, the IceDogs selected Maximilian Engelbrecht, who played last season with the Landshut Hannibals of the DNL, a development league in Germany, said general manager Dave Brown. "He`s a good-sized kid, 6-foot- 2 and 190 pounds, and he`s on the roster for the world junior team for Germany," Brown said. "He`s pretty highly regarded -- NHL Central Scouting had him near the top of their European list." The IceDogs lost starting goaltender Sebastian Dahm, who was an overage player, at the end of the season. Lucas Lobsinger is also overage and the Ontario Hockey League team drafted Nick Visentin in the third round of the priority draft in May. "This is a guy we can have for a couple of years and with our goaltending situation, we needed to solidify things a little bit. He certainly has that ability." E n ge l b r e c h t played in 35 games last season for the Hannibals, with a goals-against average of around 3.50. With experience with the German national juniors at the world championships a possibility, Brown expects Engelbrecht to challenge to be the IceDogs starter. "The team was middle of the pack, and he comes pretty highly regarded from a few different guys we spoke to in Germany. This is the first time I`ve felt comfortable in picking a guy who`s reputable, a real good player and will be able to help us right away." Each team in the CHL is allowed to carry two European import players during the season. The draft order is rotated through each of the three leagues in the CHL, with each team selecting in inverse order of their final regular season standings from 2007-08. The IceDogs were originally slated to pick 40th among the CHL teams, but swung a minor deal with the Brampton Battalion once they knew the goaltender would still be available with the 43rd pick overall. With their second pick, the IceDogs also addressed the issue of size and some international experience, selecting Marco Insam of Italy. Insam, a 19-year-old, was a member of the Italian First Division`s Milano Vipers. The 6-foot- 2, 205-pound winger had 11 goals and 16 assists. He also travelled to Canada for the world championships with the Italian national team, playing in an exhibition game before the tournament started. "You have to be a good player in that league," Brown said. "Some of our smaller, skilled guys have gone over and he`s put up equally as good numbers as they have." Brown said Insam may not have been picked earlier because he played in the first division. "I`ve been told he could score 30 goals in our league, but if he`s in the 20s, it`s still good in the first year in our league," the IceDogs GM added. "And to add a big body in that rink (Jack Gatecliff Arena) is huge." Brown said with the two selections, the IceDogs have addressed some of their concerns and have added to their stable of hopefuls when training camp opens Aug. 26. "You can`t have enough good players in your system and I think we`ve really used the import draft to our advantage this year. The game is stay at the top of the chart, not near the bottom, and we want to make sure it keeps us near the top." www.stcatharinesstandard.ca |
