Burke connection yields tryout
Zalapski paired with Jovanovski after invite from his former boss By TERRY BELL The Vancouver Province September 15, 2002 Sometimes it pays to pick up the phone and make the call. Zarley Zalapski, the 34-year-old veteran, called Canucks president and general manager Brian Burke six weeks ago to ask for a tryout. Burke said OK, and now the well-travelled Zalapski is here trying to win a spot on the Canucks blueline. On Saturday he was paired with Ed Jovanovski. "I`d played 27 games last year in Italy and I was in Germany the year before [20 games with Munich], but I wanted to get back to see where my game was at at the NHL level," Zalapski said. "I played for Brian before [when Burke was GM in Hartford in 1992-93]. He knew what kind of player I was and he felt there might be an opportunity for me here." Zalapski, who`s played 637 NHL games in Pittsburgh, Hartford, Calgary, Montreal and Philadelphia, called a number of teams and there was interest. But the Burke connection made Vancouver look like the better fit. |
